‘Remain in Light’ – An exhibition by Rod Craig

We invite you to join us at the preview evening for this exciting upcoming exhibition by one of our favourite artists, Rod raig (www.rodcraig.com), which will run throughout July and August.

blackened cities

When: Saturday June 30th , 7pm-10pm

Where: The Real Wood Furniture Company, at Mo Tighe, Chipping Norton, Chapel House Grounds, OX7 5SZ

At 8pm there will be a 45 minute performance featuring Rod creating a new work (or works) to a live musical back drop by ‘woodman & friends’ featuring Tony Poole on 12 strong guitar, Chris Baylis on Stratocaster and Emily Burridge on cello. Rod’s painting will be projected onto a large screen so that all can see. The musicians and Rod will ‘bounce off’ each other in an improvised performance of painting and music making.

The exhibition features new watercolour and ink paintings by Rod and also some oil paintings…a medium he has not worked with for many a year!

We will be serving wine, soft drinks and coffees throughout the evening and whilst there will be no charge for the performance or drinks, there will be opportunity to support a local charity that we endorse. ‘ROSY’ (www.rosy.org.uk) offers respite nursing for chronically ill children in Oxfordshire.

On other fronts we are taking part in the Cotswolds AONB hare trail (www.cotswoldsharetrail.org.uk). We bought 18 hares at the charity auction which closed last year’s festival, securing our lovely ‘Ronnie’ who we had sponsored as our ‘parting gift’ to Woodstock. We have now sold 10 of these hares and are donating 10% of these proceeds to ROSY. ‘Ronnie’ and two other hares are definitely NOT for sale but others are looking for new homes…so if you fancy an interesting new addition to your garden (or hallway…?) please do come and have a look.

By the by…we also have an ‘African’ garden on our new site featuring an 11ft high giraffe, some hanging chimps, a crane, and an ostrich made from recycled oil cans!

And finally…if you haven’t visited our new showrooms yet, our new designs keep on coming but ‘traditional’ old friends are still here as well.

We hope to see you on the 30th, or Saturdays Sundays and Mondays throughout July and August.

The Real Wood Furniture Company sale of pre-loved, ex showroom, and ‘refurbished to as new’ furniture

The time has come for another of our wonderful sales of pre-loved, ex showroom and ‘refurbished to as new’ furniture! What better way to warm your cockles during these snowy soon-to-be-spring months than to get excited over buying some of our beautifully hand crafted pieces at bargain prices!

We stand by our furniture and are always happy to buy back pieces that we have made. Most of the furniture on offer falls into this category and is offered to us due to down/up sizing, style change etc…most pieces are offered in their ‘pre-loved’ condition but some pieces we have refurbished to ‘as new’…in addition there are a few pieces that are being offered ‘ex showroom’ that have been discontinued from our core style range.

This sale will be held in ‘The Dog House’, our first out building here at our new location. During the sale, our main showrooms will be open as usual for you to wander at your leisure. There is plenty of parking on site and lots to look at. Large hares, and African animals (including an 11ft high giraffe) grace our garden space and our lovely showroom building (a beautifully restored 1704 Coaching Inn) is well worth a look!

If you haven’t visited us since we were in Woodstock, you will find new contemporary designs and new materials (forged steel, stainless steel, glass etc), sitting alongside our traditional pieces.

SALE – SATURDAY MARCH 17TH AND SUNDAY MARCH 18TH 11.00am – 5.00pm

‘Colour at Christmas’

Hello again!

Apologies for the ‘radio silence’ over the past many months… apart from announcing the new website etc…it’s been a hectic period, what with one thing and another.  The good news is that now that the new site is up and running, your correspondent intends (has the best of intentions!)… to blog  more regularly….so here we go….

The festive period is upon us and we will be staging another of our ‘Colour at Christmas’ exhibitions, running from Sat Dec 2nd to Sat Dec 23rd.  We will be open Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays 11.00 – 5.00.

The exhibition features :

Garry Jones – ceramics to make you smile and laugh out loud.  The crazy world of Garry Jones features hares and other animals in the strangest contexts….

Claire Francis – Salt Cellar Hats…

‘kooky’ hats in velvets silks, faux fur etc to keep your head warm and to help you stand out from the crowd….

Michael Harris – Precious Metal…a photographic study of vintage lead cast toys, a photographic study of vintage lead cast toys, much loved but often confined to the attic, rarely recognised for their unwavering and selfless service to childhood dreams….photographed from different angles and perspectives, they look like heroes of a bygone era…

On the theme of hares, we recently sponsored, ‘Ronnie’, painted by Rod Craig as part of the Cotswold March Hare Trail. At the end of the festival, all 80 large hares and some 30 leverets were auctioned for charity and somehow, Ronnie came home to Chipping Norton and brought some of his biggest and best buddies with him, so you can now enjoy a little hop around our ‘Hare Garden’ and check out their various stories…

Special Sale of accessories and artworks

To accompany the exhibition, we will also be holding a special sale of accessories and artworks…perfect presents to yourself…or for others…

….and of course, there will be a warm welcome from Scrumpie-Pup and a cup of tea, coffee or mulled wine will be on offer!

We hope to see you soon!

Season’s greetings

Chris

Insider tip…visit us after dark to see our lovingly restored former Coaching Inn gorgeously lit up in swathes of blue light!

The new website goes live… A new star is born…

If you’ve got this far then you’re obviously on our brand new website and whether you’ve seen the full length film or not, you’ve at least seen ‘Scrumpie-pup’ welcoming you to our new showrooms… a true star of stage and screen is born!

Its been a long haul to get this new site up and running but thanks to the skills of the lovely Beth and the nice team at Purple Frog… here we are!

We hope the new site portrays the ‘vibe’ of our new showrooms and our new designs well, and that it will entice you to visit us soon. Please keep checking back as we will be adding information about individual pieces of furniture over the next few weeks. It’s all very exciting!

We are really pleased with the new site and think it ties in well with our new beginning ‘off the high street’.

New showrooms… new website… new designs… familiar friends… the same values… and the same personal touch! We hope to see you soon!

All the best

Chris

P.S… Watch our full film (starring ‘Scrumpie-pup’)!

Special Sale of Pre-Owned Furniture

Moving has been a bit of a rollercoaster and it’s still running…

Anyway… We finally opened here, outside Chipping Norton, as some of you will know, at the beginning of March. We are loving being ‘not on the high street’ and really enjoying our wonderful new space. Many people have been telling me “you’re looking better that when I saw you earlier this year”… think I was a bit stressed with the restoration of our (now) lovely old Coaching Inn… and ’stuff’…

Although the main showrooms have been up and running for a few months now, we have only just completed the refurbishment of ‘The Dog House’ – our first outbuilding! This allows us to present another of our Special Sales of pre owned furniture… pieces made by us that we have brought back from clients for a variety of reasons….house move, style change etc…

SATURDAY JULY 15TH AND SUNDAY JULY 16TH 11:00-17:00

Showroom relocation – from Woodstock to near Chipping Norton

After 20 years of enjoyable and successful trading in Woodstock, we are on the move! We are currently in the process of restoring a wonderful old Coaching Inn,
a mile to the North East of Chipping Norton town centre, to where we will in due course relocate our showrooms. The ‘refurbishment’ programme is taking longer than anticipated (!) and we now aim to remain trading in Woodstock until Christmas,

We will keep you posted via the website about closing the closing date at Woodstock and the opening at Chipping Norton….it will be ‘business as usual during the transition!!

A Celebration of Trees

26From ‘horses’ in our last exhibition to to ‘trees’…the latter giving us the wonderful resource with which, as a company, we work ….

‘art in the furniture store’ presents a new exhibition…”In Celebration of Trees”…

Three very different ‘takes’ on trees with:

Rod Craig having produced some special watercolour and ink paintings of trees in Blenheim Park and other local spots…

Ian Fraser using photographic techniques he normally applies to capturing incredibly individual images of buildings, having produced some special images of trees

you may recognise from the locality…… and

Chis Townsend, celebrated tree artist and sculptor working in forged steel, having produced some special sculptures for our exhibition.

Add in to the mix at the preview party, the premier performance of a new piece of music from tp & woodman, aptly titled ‘In celebration of trees’ and it all adds up to a great multi media celebration focusing on the mighty English oak.

Preview party – Fri Oct 30th 6.30-9.00pm in our Woodstock showrooms

The Real Wood Furniture Company is a supporter of ‘The Wychwood Project‘, a charity promoting engagement with the landscape and wildlife habitats contained within the former Royal Hunting Forest of Wychwood, which covered most of West Oxfordshire. The charity works in areas of land management, conservation, education and is keen to encourage the participation of all who live in the area. The Real Wood Furniture Company has a special interest in tree planting projects. A ‘charity donation’ bar will raise funds for the project at the exhibition preview party.

On other fronts, our steel horse ‘Milo’ has found a new and pleasant pasture

The Wychwood Project

On the furniture front, work progresses on our new ‘T Cup’ range, but in the meantime we have ’soft launched’ a new chair.

Our ‘Spires chair’ takes its inspiration from a ’scroll back’ design made famous by master chairmaker Stephen Hazell who worked in Oxford from 1846.The original design is attributed to William Wardell, who is recorded as working in Summertown from 1839. He probably trained Stephen Hazell. The simple ’scroll back’ chair in time came to be known as ‘The Oxford Chair’. Having literally handled thousands of antique ‘Oxford chairs’ over the years, my starting point of inspiration was to create a chair of similar simplicity, low in height but with a generous seat and offering good comfort with an over arching feel of the ‘contemporary’. We are making this with Scottish elm in the seat and back horizontal rails with other parts in English ash. We are about to make a second batch with English burr oak in the horizontal rails. As you can see from the photos, we are offering both a simple ‘H’ stretcher and a ‘crinoline’ or ‘cowhorn’ stretcher with angular shaped ‘torpedoes’ jointing the stretcher to the back legs. As ever with Windsor chairs, they are nothing if not an amalgam of their angles, so we have been through many prototypes and stages of ‘finessing’ the design. We have sold to two customers already within two weeks of the chair ‘hitting the floor’ with no promotion as such, so we hope that the design will have a wide appeal. The offer of wide plank Scottish elm has also afforded us the opportunity to look at table making with elm again. Our ‘Spires Pilgrim Table’ features 2 x wide planks of elm, flanked by narrower planks of English burr oak. By making the end ‘cleats’ the same width as the outer planks, we have created the illusion of a ‘paneled’ top without the inherent problems of shrinkage causing gaps to appear!

Time to go for the moment….I shall return later with ’sparkle’ aided by a glass of red!

With best wishes
