A well proportioned pair of mid / late 19th century Chippendale style armchairs of good quality in well patinated mahogany. The chairs feature fretted and relief carved splats, carving to the top rail and scroll over arms sweeping into sympathetically curved arm supports. The back legs feature a delightful ‘kick’ at the foot and a gentle inside chamfer. These chairs were made by a chair maker who understood ‘proportion’ and who was understanding of Chippendale’s original designs.
Both chairs have marks indicating that they formerly belonged to a larger set of chairs and the stamped initials ‘JH’, possibly referring to James Hopkinson, a well known 19th century Nottinghamshire maker who published his ‘Memoirs of a Victorian Cabinet Maker’ (albeit more a social history of the time, rather than a review of his practice).
Restoration / Condition : These chairs bear the marks of use, commensurate with their age.One arm has an aged repair to the lower part of on arm support and a small patch in the top surface. Both chairs have drop in upholstered seats covered in a dusky patterned purple / brown fabric. The fabric on one chair is very sun bleached (see photos).
